Nuclear progress debated as North Korea hosts concerns
The United States and North Korea discussed progress on the 1994 nuclear accord amid reports of a secret project at a mountainside site 25 miles from Yongbyon. Scientists Discover New Robins Species in Central Africa
Pamela Beresford announced the discovery of a new forest robin in the Central African Republic at the International Ornithological Congress in Durban. The small olive brown bird bears a bright yellow red throat and upper breast, differing from typical forest robins. Beresford examined some 300 specimens from 89 areas at seven museums before confirming the new species. Researchers note Africa’s bird diversity is underexplored and expect more new species. DNA analysis reveals hidden genetic differences among superficially similar birds.

Former South Africa's Botha convicted over subpoena
Former President P W Botha, 82, found guilty of ignoring a Truth Commission subpoena to testify on apartheid abuses. A one year suspended jail term and a 1577 dollar fine were imposed due to age and health considerations. Prosecution sought prison but halted to avoid sentencing a frail elder. Botha's supporters jeered outside. ANC welcomed the verdict as reconciliation progress.
