Army vows ongoing aid to fallen soldiers survivors
The Army mails thousands of letters to families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan asking how it can improve support, acknowledging past mistakes and promising long term services. Col. Carl M. Johnson says about 13,500 letters went out this month to some 20,000 survivors, with meetings planned at installations over the coming weeks. The letter urges candor and is signed by Gen. Reuben D. Jones. The program now targets extended assistance beyond the immediate aftermath, including both spouses and parents, and a follow up questionnaire is sent about six months after a death.
