Lawrence Scouts recall 13th World Scout Jamboree typhoon ordeal

Four Lawrence Boy Scouts describe a 29 hour trip to Asagiri Japan for the 13th World Scout Jamboree. They faced a Tokyo typhoon flood at Mt Fuji, tents washed away, and a shrine and schoolhouse evacuation, then aided by Japanese officials. They later toured Japan and anticipate 1975 Norway jamboree.

Local Man Dies After Locust Heart Attack

Charlie W. Weers 43 of 618 Saratoga Pl. died after a heart attack while driving in the 800 block of Locust. He suffered a first attack at 1:15 am and died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital about 3 am. Weers owned Weers Refrigerating Co. Survivors include his widow Marjorie two sons Victor and Randall two sisters Mrs Martha Cole and Mrs Golda Mae Heinze and one brother Melvin. Funeral services are pending with Rumsey Funeral Home.

Veterans heckle Maxwell Taylor at Kennedy Airport

Gen Maxwell Taylor former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and ex ambassador to South Vietnam was confronted by about 60 Vietnam Veterans Against the War at Kennedy Airport. The protesters shouted questions about My Lai and body counts. Taylor answered I don’t know any of them.

Bombers Hit North Front In New Raids

U S B62 bombers conducted seven raids over South Vietnam's northern front as a 10 day old North Vietnamese offensive continued. Thailand based planes unloaded about 600 tons of explosives on targets below the DMZ while North Vietnamese rockets and mortars kept striking South Vietnamese bases along the DMZ. Saigon reports five fresh shellings on DMZ bases Fuller and Alpha 2 were hit twice and a third base once with no American casualties. An 80 round mortar barrage on Fuller marked the largest shelling in the first of the two bombardments.

Boy Injured In Mishap In Lawrence

James M. Coffman age 15 of 1500 W Eighth Terr treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after his motorcycle struck the rear of a car on West Ninth near Sunset Drive. The driver Jeanne H Bellows age 43 of Topeka said she was stopped for traffic when hit. Damages were estimated at 200 dollars for the car and 150 for the motorcycle. Police checked nine other Friday collisions and a Douglas County deputy sheriff handled one minor crash.
