Legal Aid Society Formed By Douglas County Lawyers
Douglas County Bar Association and KU Law School form the Douglas County Legal Aid Society Inc to assist Lawrence and Douglas County residents with civil cases. The nonprofit will rely on volunteer lawyers and third year KU law students with a potential $1 token fee. The courthouse area is planned for office space with four attorneys and three lay board members. The society will help those unable to afford legal services and may handle divorces under certain conditions.

Noted pianist Jan Chiapusso dies at 79 in Kansas
Jan Chiapusso a KU piano professor for 26 years before retiring in 1960 died after a recent illness at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 30 p m at Rumsey Funeral Home. He authored Bach's World recently published by Indiana University Press.

100 M Die in Hard Fighting at Da Nang
The battle 31 miles southwest of Da Nang entered its fifth day with American and South Vietnamese forces clashing against heavy North Vietnamese resistance. More than 1,200 allied troops were committed and U.S. casualties rose to at least 27 dead and 150 wounded as a downed helicopter exploded in the fight.

U S Urges Hanoi To Identify POWs In Peace Talks
In Paris the United States pressed North Vietnam to identify the more than 1000 American prisoners of war and guarantee humane treatment. Acting U S envoy Philip Habib cited a 42 Senator letter demanding a full POW list a camp inspection and repatriation of the sick and wounded with return negotiations. He called for accountability and said the stance reflects American public opinion.

Trio of Juveniles Fail in Bank Tower Hanging Attempt
Three Lawrence youths ages 16 and 17 climbed half way up the First National Bank tower at 9 p.m. to hang a painted sheet reading 70. Police halted the stunt. the case goes to Douglas County Juvenile Court with advisement pending. Separate patrol caught sisters ages 11 and 13 from Sunflower Village and a 14-year-old girl from DeSoto fleeing a patrol at 1:15 a.m. They were released to a parent and referred to Johnson County Juvenile Court.

Two Pot-Pickers Caught at Riley
Two Detroit men were arrested by a highway patrolman at Fort Riley Kansas as they loaded three boxes of marijuana onto a car trailer. About 50 pounds were harvested on the Fort Riley military reservation. Federal charges will be filed. An undersheriff said the men had a map showing marijuana growth and knives possibly used to cut the plants.
