Kansas Spending Exceeds Income For Fund Decline
Kansas state government again spent more than it took in for the year ended June 30. The general fund and sales tax fund declined by over 12.5 million dollars, with the general fund dropping from 15,957,942 to 12,596,732 and the sales tax fund to 5,361,555. Gov. George Docking said the result shows a short of funds and urged careful review of all programs for cost reductions while the Legislature seeks additional revenue. Expenditures rose mainly for highways and education, and a gasoline tax increase from 5 to 6 cents per gallon appeared likely for 1958.
