FDA clears Miacalcin nasal spray for osteoporosis in estrogen intolerant women over five years post menopause. It must accompany calcium and vitamin D. Trials showed increased spinal bone density but not hip bone. Long term studies requested to prove fracture reduction.
Osteoporosis affects about 25 million Americans, mostly postmenopausal women, causing bones to weaken and fracture easily. It leads to 1.5 million fractures and around 50,009 deaths annually.
Sandoz says millions of women could be eligible for Miacalcin though no uptake figures are given for osteoporosis patients refusing estrogen. Merck Fosamax to become the first nonhormonal osteoporosis treatment, binding to cells that attack bone. FDA approval anticipated by year end. Miacalcin expected by winter with no price set. Side effects include nasal irritation, nosebleeds, sinusitis. FDA urges routine nasal exams.
