Pope John Paul II appeals for return to Krakow crowd

In a tearful farewell Mass in Krakow Pope John Paul II told over two million Poles he would like to return one day though this is in God's hands. The 82 year old ailing pope spoke amid prayers for his health and mortality during his ninth homeland visit, drawing the largest Polish crowd since the 1995 Manila event. He recalled his early life in Poland and urged prayers for living and dead parishioners, as spectators urged him to stay.

Trafficway's companion becomes a lost highway in Lawrence

The Eastern Parkway project, once approved for 14.7 million to link downtown Lawrence with Kansas Highway 10, is dead after failing to gain support. The Eastern Connection and East River Bridge, a 39.95 million plan linking K-10 and US 40, remains unlikely as state officials won’t cover costs through 2009. KDOT counsel Mike Rees says the South Lawrence Trafficway stays a top regional need.
