AP reports hundreds of U S infantrymen rushed to aid two American companies totaling 177 men near Da Nang after a North Vietnamese force large as many as 1 200 enveloped them. Casualties reached 15 dead and over 50 wounded with 148 enemy killed as air power and artillery struck back.
Mississippi leaders pressed for martial law on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Camille killed 128. Maj. Gen. Walter Johnson said 2,000 more troops were needed to restore order as sightseers hampered rescue work. Officials reported 23 bodies in Pass Christian and a grim toll forecast.
Royce M. Grammer, 21, of 745 N Y Street, died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from fat embolism following a fractured femur caused by a dump truck at Bowersock Sand Plant. He was a driver for Anderson Trucking and Excavation Co and died after being run over by the truck’s dual wheels during loading. Funeral arrangements are set for Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home.
