Martial Law Urged for Disaster Area in Mississippi

Mississippi leaders pressed for martial law on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Camille killed 128. Maj. Gen. Walter Johnson said 2,000 more troops were needed to restore order as sightseers hampered rescue work. Officials reported 23 bodies in Pass Christian and a grim toll forecast.

Lawrence man dies from fat embolism after leg fracture

Royce M. Grammer, 21, of 745 N Y Street, died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from fat embolism following a fractured femur caused by a dump truck at Bowersock Sand Plant. He was a driver for Anderson Trucking and Excavation Co and died after being run over by the truck’s dual wheels during loading. Funeral arrangements are set for Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home.

Man Patches Chuckholes Himself On Michigan Street

Corwin Sperry of Rt. 1 filled and smoothed three blocks of potholes along Michigan Street with tar on Monday evening. He bought tar for about $8 and spent three hours patching cavities from 200 block to a creek, saying the city lacked funds to fix the streets.
