Washington reports President Truman ordered release of a long secret international oil deals study amid charges of a powerful oil cartel siphoning aid funds. The move spurs a Senate inquiry into price fixing and monopoly practices. Sparksman announced the report's 10 chapters will be printed this week for distribution.
Judge Beryl R. Johnson announced in Topeka the 1952 53 appointments to Kansas Bar Association standing and special committees. Six Lawrencians were named: Richard B. Stevens First District membership. Bean F J Moreau Kansas University Law School committee on education and admissions. Raymond Rice historical. Alan Asher legal institute. Charles D Stough uniform commercial code study. Henry Asher taxation. More than 300 of 1500 members serve on over 20 committees during the year.
Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon, labeling himself a liberal Republican, said Tuesday he will campaign for Dwight D. Eisenhower. He argued that while they may disagree on some issues, time will reveal the correct solutions and praised Eisenhower for honesty and independence.
The Air Force announced a new low major accident rate of 29 per 100000 flight hours for the first six months of 1952, a nine percent drop from the previous six months. Jet fighters showed notable gains, at 79 versus 97 in late 1951 and 101 in early 1951, continuing a downward trend from a postwar high of 61. Miller's Barbecue on U.S. 40 and 24 is closed, reopening September 2.
In Tehran on a busy street a U S Army sergeant and Persian driver were pelted with rocks by about 100 Communist youths during a traffic stop. Sgt James Hagan of Atlanta was lightly struck and not seriously hurt. The incident follows months of pro Mosadegh unrest and clashes on Istanbul Street between Nationalists and Communists.
National Plowing Contest officials refused to allow Adlai Stevenson to speak Sept 5 alongside Dwight D. Eisenhower, reversing an earlier invitation. Campaign manager Wilson Wyatt said speakers could not appear on the same day, citing prior commitments and the desire to avoid a political rally, while organizers claimed no invitation had been extended.
Reports outline a coordinated push to win over women voters for Dwight D. Eisenhower. Mrs. Roy F. Priest leads the initiative from Denver with aides and 14 party women joining in conferences and a luncheon.
Washington i Beginning Saturday dealers may set their own top retail ceilings for new cars. The Office of Price Stabilization says it is dropping dollar and cent ceilings, which could lift prices about one percent. Dealers must post ceilings by make and model and disclose delivery charges. the new ceilings will be based on each dealer's calculations.
Four California forest fires burned 8 000 acres of timber and brush. Larry Higgins, 21, state forestry worker from Lakeland Village, was killed when engulfed by flames south of Elsinore. The Mt Hamilton blaze charred 7 000 acres. four firemen were injured battling the wind driven fires.
The closing average for 60 stocks reached 107.3, marking an overall gain as the market posted a modest advance. Investors watched trading amid mixed sector performance with technology and financials contributing to the uplift.
Some 33,000 workers across nine states remain on strike Tuesday. In New York the CIO union served a strike notice affecting 32,000 Bethlehem Steel shipyard workers while negotiations with United Mine Workers advance for about 75,000 hard coal miners. In Canton 12,000 CIO United Steelworkers consider a new contract to end a 30 day strike at Timken Roller Bearing. Cleveland saw 2,000 Republic Steel workers walk out in a wildcat action. About 18,000 B F Goodrich workers, across nine plants, remain off the job after 10 weeks of talks. In Terre Haute the CIO United Auto Workers accepted a wage contract ending a 14-week strike at Allis Chalmers jet plane plant involving about 340 workers.
U N commander Gen William Harrison said an armistice is possible but no idea when after exchange of sharp words with Communist delegates at Panmunjom. Delegations took a fourth straight week long recess and Nam I agreed to next meeting set for Aug 27. Harrison noted Communist willingness to pay for peace. Nam I protested, then angered by remark about Chinese soldiers and volunteers.
In Jackson Mississippi supporters of Dwight Eisenhower and Senator Nixon organized a separate slate of eight electors pledged to the Republican ticket. They denounced Monday’s state Democratic convention endorsement of Adlai Stevenson and Senator Sparkman. Delegates, voting 222 to 5142, pledged the eight electors to Eisenhower and Sparkman, resisting calls to modify or soften the endorsement.
Dr Elijah Mobry Owen, 89, longtime Lawrence physician and osteopath, died at home 823 Ky. St after years of ill health. A 54 year osteopath and 47 year MD, he served as almoner for the Scottish Rite Bodies since 1925 and held church, Masonic, and medical roles in Douglas County. Survived by widow Lena Miller Owen and several siblings, funeral arrangements pending Rumsey Funeral Home.
The 82nd Congress spent 3 059 915 dollars in taxpayers money before adjournment as the final Congressional Record edition was printed. Capitol Hill chatter totaled 35 999 pages at 85 cents per page with senators more verbose than House members. Senators spoke 1 648 hours 10 minutes over 287 days, while the House put in 1 162 hours 15 minutes over 274 days.
Rural Douglas County teachers attend the Douglas County Teachers Institute at Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence. About 110 educators, plus nine from Osage Franklin Jefferson Montgomery and Sedgwick counties, gather to discuss general education topics with speakers from KU and area schools.
Byron Faden finished last in his motorboat debut at Eskridge races yet won the event after officials disqualified all other boats for starting early. Washington Secretary of Agriculture Brannan may soon publish a summary of a nationwide survey showing strong farmer endorsement of federal farm aid programs. The 3,000 reports were gathered by county and state groups and reviewed by a department committee. The timing and nature of the release could fuel controversy over Brannan's four year old farm plan targeting Republicans in the presidential race.
Kansas state and federal agriculture departments report late corn recovering from a dry spell but overall crop conditions remain poor. Recept rains aided late corn while early corn often failed to develop ears or fill them. Week rainfall averaged 1.12 inches in the eastern third, 0.63 in the central, and 0.19 in the western third, with western areas still needing rain.
Topeka announces Wal lace T Wolfe of Oberlin will deliver the keynote at the Republican Party Council in August. Wolfe, 48, is Decatur County GOP chairman and former county attorney.
In Pasadena a contractor doing road repairs mixed work with politics by placing a sign urging voters to choose a political candidate. City officials, citing an ordinance on political posters on public property, forced the removal of the final four words from the sign during a Tuesday cleanup.
University of Kansas announces five attractions for the 1952 53 Concert Course beginning Nov 12 1952 and ending May 6 1953 at Hoch Auditorium. The season opens with the Wagner Opera Company Carmen followed by Gina Bachauer on Dec 15 the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra Feb 23 the Ballet Theater March 19 and a Robert Rounseville recital May 6. Chamber Music Series runs at Strong Auditorium with five performances led by New Music Quartet Griller Quartet New York Quartet and Amadeus Quartet. Season tickets available at the Fine Arts office.
New York dispatch reports 75,000 hard coal miners and industry negotiators began talks with the union framing a wage increase as impossible for now. John L. Lewis, UMW president, detained in Washington but may join talks. Edward G. Fox, head of management, cites fierce competition from oil and gas, especially natural gas.
Ww Vivian M Meckel has been elected chairman of the Ellis County Republican Central Committee. A past president of Sixth District Young Republicans, he succeeds Delmas Haney, one of Kansas delegates to the Republican National Convention who voted for Sen Taft. Haney was not a candidate for reelection.
Eighteen aviation enthusiasts joined the reactivated Lawrence Civil Air Patrol Squadron No. 2 led by Captain J. K. Lucas. The unit, tied to the Civilian Defense program, trains for emergencies from enemy bombing to natural disasters while promoting aviation to youths. Cadets 15 to 20 and seniors over 18 are eligible, with current seniors including Ernest Joerg and Lola Helm among others. a single cadet recruit, Chuck Fisher, is noted. Meetings are Wednesdays at 8 p.m. at Meebel airfield, with planned trips such as a Council Grove picnic and boat races.
Workers at Douglas County fairgrounds on East Nineteenth Street prepare for the annual 4 H and FFA fair to run Wednesday through Friday. A new 18 by 8 foot steel door was installed to allow truck loading into the home economics building. Road crews install awnings and raise an American flag for opening ceremonies. Officials expect entries in home economics, booth displays, and junior leadership projects, with livestock, crop, and poultry judging and parades scheduled.
The forecast covers August 2 for Kansas Oklahoma and Nebraska. Temperatures will be about 30 degrees above normal in Nebraska and around 10 degrees above normal in Kansas and Oklahoma with highs in the mid 80s in Nebraska and lower 90s in Kansas. Western Nebraska will see highs in the upper 80s to 90s while eastern plains dip. Cooler air moves over most of Kansas Thursday with rising temperatures by Friday and Saturday. Rain is scattered with little overall accumulation in eastern areas and scant moisture is expected elsewhere. Fair to partly cloudy conditions with a chance of widely scattered storms in the north and northwest Wednesday night into Thursday.
