Budget tweaks loom as city eyed for higher mill levy
Lawrence city commissioners weigh a maximum mill levy hike above 33.207 mills, with 2024 budget plans proposing the largest increase in five decades to fund a rainy-day fund and curb cuts in fire, EMS, and parks. A November sales tax question to fund housing and homelessness programs is under review, with state law requiring a citywide vote. A public hearing on revenue-neutral rate precedes final budget actions set for September 3. The meeting also considers the revised Standard Traffic Ordinance allowing payment plans and waivers, plus a $100 cap on license reinstatement fees.
