K State researchers pursue camelina diesel replacement
Kansas State University researchers from Kansas Michigan and Nebraska are genetically engineering the oilseed camelina sativa to lower its oil viscosity for potential diesel use. The project blends DNA from burning bush and aims to grow on marginal land with low water needs while avoiding food-crop impact. If tests succeed the oil could be pressed directly from seeds for diesel or used as a lubricant or chemical feedstock.

Quantrill Raid events set at Watkins Museum Saturday tours
The Watkins Museum of History hosts a multi day commemoration of Quantrill's Raid on Aug 21 1863 with bus and walking tours led by experts John Jewell and others. Tours run 8 am 10 am 3 pm and 5 pm for members and 20 for non members with walking tours 8:30 am 11 am and 6 pm at reduced member prices. Advance reservations advised via the museum site or phone. A 1:30 pm Saturday program by Katie Armitage, author of Lawrence Survivors of Quantrill's Raid, examines rebuilding after the raid.
