Packwood diaries allegedly altered by suspect assault probe

Senate Ethics Committee reportedly has evidence that Senator Bob Packwood altered diaries he was forced to surrender under court order. Packwood publicly denied any diary alterations while sources say he provided unaltered excerpts earlier and later was compelled to hand over complete diaries. The panel’s May finding cited substantial credible evidence of diary alteration tied to suspected misconduct spanning 1969 to 1990 and possible obstruction of the investigation. If true, obstruction could trigger Justice Department criminal inquiry.
