Fidel Castro says Cuba can beat Alliance for Progress
In Havana Fidel Castro declared the Cuban revolution could accomplish in one year what Kennedy's Alliance for Progress seeks to in ten. He cited Cuba's literacy drive, mobilizing 30,000 workers with teachers and students to teach peasants to read and write as proof, as nearly half of Cuba’s million illiterates are learning. The Confederation of Workers backed the effort with a resolution imposing penalties on workers who refuse to learn.

Sheriff Injured In Car Wreck Near Ottawa
Sheriff Fred Broeker and three others were injured when the Franklin County patrol car overturned 14 miles south of Ottawa on U.S. 59 on Wednesday. Deputy P. W. Jones, driving, was transporting two prisoners from Bartlesville to Lawrence. Mendell and Freeman were en route to face grand larceny charges. Car damage was extensive. Broeker sustained an eye injury and other bruises. Sheriff Gilmore investigated the crash.

Explorer XII completes first wide looping earth orbit
Washington AP reports Explorer XII, an 83 pound instrument package, looped 54 000 miles out on its first orbit and came within about 170 miles of Earth after 31 hours from launch at Cape Canaveral. NASA says telemetry is excellent and data will shed light on space magnetic fields and radiation.

Kansas City Kaw Valley Railroad to Quit in September
The Kansas City Kaw Valley Railroad will go out of business next month after the Interstate Commerce Commission approved the abandonment of the 46 year old electric line from Kansas City to Lawrence. Freight service now runs between Bonner Springs and Kansas City Kansas. Operation will end once Union Pacific changes tracks in Bonner Springs for a switching connection with Santa Fe. Much of the line east of Bonner Springs will be bought by the state for the K32 four lane highway project.

Fall Injures Woman on City Stairs. Condition Reported Good
