A fierce storm struck a 12 mile area south of Lawrence at 11:15 AM, bringing wind, heavy rain, and hail that toppled trees and damaged crops and barns. Two Killed by Car in Kansas Crash
Parsons Kansas August 17 Dave Wiles 52 and his son Jerry 28 of Erie Kansas were struck and killed on U S Highway 59 by a car driven by Don Hall 20 of Parsons. Edmon Carrell 21 riding with the Wiles said the elder man stopped the car with lights burning and both men stepped into the road as Hall’s vehicle hit from the rear then swerved striking them. Dave Wiles died instantly and Jerry died en route to a hospital. Carrell said Hall claimed he did not see the men or the parked car until too late. Wiles family includes a widow and three daughters. David Wiles is the father-in-law of Mrs. Swalley.
