Four radio equipped planes powered toward Wheeler Field Honolulu racing for 53500 in prizes from Oakland to Honolulu endangering delays. The Woolaree Miss Doran Aloha Golden Eagle were involved as authorities tracked positions by radio and steamship reports. The contest drew wide attention across the Pacific with Manila Manila and Asia watching closely for success and mail travel implications.
Dozens of aircraft movements are logged from Oakland to Honolulu with the Golden Eagle Aloha and Miss Doran among planes noted. Destroyers Meyer Hazelwood and McDonough track Woolaroc 300 to 450 miles out. Crowds exceed 16 000 at the field while Governor Farrington greets the arrival. News networks in Japan and Britain report the epic aerial voyage connecting the islands with the homeland.
In San Francisco on August 17 AP reports four planes from the $35 Dole race toward Honolulu were near the halfway point. Two planes on each route were tracked by steamers City of Los Angeles and Mariulani. Navy observers note possible radio beacon range issues and pocketing risks for the southern pair.
Forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Thursday with slightly cooler temperatures in southeast and extreme east portions. All clear except Arkansas City where last night’s rain affected roads. Coffeyville roads good, Dodge City rough, Emporia and Hutchinson muddy to rough, Salina muddy to water blocked, other areas muddy. Douglas County roads rough.

Charles A. Lindbergh lands at Kansas City from St. Louis on the Guggenheim air tour, dedicates a new airport, then departs for Wichita. He lands at the north end to avoid a soft runway, refuses to leave without police protection, and schedules a Wichita appearance the next day with Governor Paulen on KFR radio at 7 30 p m.
Roosevelt Field and Roosevalt New York reports show the Fokker monoplane Old Glory delaying its nonstop Rome attempt due to overheated wheel bearings during taxi. Co pilots Lloyd Bertaud and James Hill expect repairs to take a few hours with a possible 1 p.m. ET takeoff if weather and radio tests permit.
Boston August 17 AP indications that counsel for Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti may seek another move to bring their case before the U S Supreme Court were noted as Arthur D Hillion chief counsel inquired about filing a petition for a writ of certiorari in federal court offices. The Massachusetts high court had been asked to hear petitions for a writ of error.
Salina faces its worst flood since 1903 as Dry Creek and the Smoky Hill flood the east side, with 1,000 homes reported flooded basements and water reaching near second stories in low areas. Wichita and Great Bend also report major flood conditions, while Hutchinson, Emporia, and other towns monitor rising rivers and continuing damage.
Dr able G. Brown secretary of the state board of health and C H Kinnaman state epidemiologist departed for southeastern Kansas to inspect health conditions in Allen Bourbon Crawford Cherokee Labette and Montgomery counties tracing recent typhoid outbreaks at Allen and Crawford counties health officers requested assistance. The item includes an advertisement offering $25 in gold for naming a new ice cream from Lawrence Sanitary Milk & Ice Cream Co.
Topeka August 17 AP Gas companies controlled by Henry L Doherty agree to subject their earnings to investigation by an impartial agency acceptable to both the companies and the League of Kansas Municipalities Senator James A Finley counsel for the Empire Gas and Fuel company said the Empire Gas and Fuel company is the parent corporation for Degarty concerns in Kansas The League has called city officials to meet here tomorrow to pool legal and engineering talent for a proposed challenge to existing gas rates.
Workmen began removing partitions on the third floor of the Old Eldridge built in 1865. Basil Green, contractor, says the remaining portion will be fully removed in about a month and the south half will start before October 1. The south half, 55 feet wide, will match the north half in five stories, forming one structure with a dining room coffee shop banquet hall and kitchen on the ground floor. The lobby will connect to new rooms and two entrances will link to Massachusetts street and Lane. About forty guest rooms will be added with outside exposure.
Coffeyville Kansas August reports show no evidence of padding in Coffeyville census figures. County Attorney C W Mitchell announced after questioning ten witnesses and before twenty seven more including state representative Harold C McGugin. Mitchell noted counts near the record with isolated discrepancies in two families and said Independence fengus records were altered after submission to the county clerk. He spoke as a petition for redistricting CO county commissioner districts moved toward the supreme court.
Governor Paulen expressed confidence in Kansas highway work during the unveiling of the last slab on federal highway 73 West between Lawrence and Topeka at Williamstown Junction. He touted 365 day roads, praised the highway department, and urged more miles and better funding, while J W Gardner highlighted uniform road links and federal aid efforts.
Joplin Missouri reports one of the worst floods in over twenty years, disrupting railroad service and isolating several cities as flood crests advance. Spring River near the Empire District Electric dam at Lowell bears the greatest danger with damage extending from Waco to Carthage downstream.
Four inmates of the Kansas penitentiary were killed when a shale pile collapsed in a mine area. Warnings had been issued to stay away from the labrin when the accident occurred. Victims named were Kenneth Combs 31 J Corwin 31 Tiger Day 44 and Pearl Wilson 43.

Washington on August 17 reports the Agriculture Department says farmers plan a fall sowing increase of 13.7 percent for winter wheat and 20.0 percent for rye from last year. If carried out, winter wheat would cover 48,637,000 acres versus 42,351,000 a year ago.
John G. Stutz announces strong city turnout for a Topeka conference to study natural gas rates and service. Kansas City Mo and Kan, Wichita, Hutchinson, Winfield and others will send officials. Winfield shares its low rates and a $100000 profit from a municipal plant. Clinton Montgomery will present figures after six months of data gathering. bulletins detailing rates for 121 Kansas towns will be available at the meeting.
Lawrence shows the lowest infant mortality rate among Kansas cities at 46 per 1000 live births in the American Child Health Association 1926 report. The survey covers 35 states and the District of Columbia, ranking cities by population and noting various state and city rates across size classes.
The League of Kansas Municipalities published a bulletin listing gas rates for 121 Kansas towns as the first section of its annual Public Utilities Rate Book. Lawrence's rate is described as reasonable compared with cities lacking nearby gas fields, per executive secretary John G. Stutz. Some cities with local gas fields show lower rates. The World Co. The city commission fixed a 10.65 mill levy for the coming year to raise about 196000 for city affairs with another 20000 from other revenue, totaling roughly 216000. About 42000 goes to permanent improvements and debt discharge, 4000 for a machinery house, 2500 for a Sexton’s house at Oak Hill cemetery, 2500 for street sweeper purchase, 1500 for the community building. The city now owes 8900 on it total. A sinking fund will receive 2800 to retire bonds due in 1934, and 7000 will retire bonds due next year. 22000 goes to interest and principal on intersection and paving bonds. After these allocations, about 173700 remains for routine expenses, about 14475 monthly. The 10.65 mill levy is 22 mills less than 1926’s 10.87.

Lawrence report from Chaplain Evan A Edwards says he will assume the pastorate of a 1600-member church in St. Petersburg, Florida on September 1, leaving his Norman Oklahoma post at the University of Oklahoma Episcopal work. He earlier resigned Trinity Episcopal in Lawrence after years.
