French forces advance along a three mile front north and south of the Somme as press reports indicate ground gained and continued pressure against enemy lines. Strong combat continues with artillery duels and infantry assaults reported from multiple sectors.
London reports heavy fighting north of Maurepas and along the Somme with French gains near Quillement Maerepas and Armis, as British and French troops push against German positions. Fresh Balkans action described with infantry attacks and ongoing bombardments along multiple fronts amid heavy casualties.
Two men pleaded guilty to intoxication and taelarves of in toxication. One was jailed after being arrested in Keer district. A woman found guilty of frequedit disorderly house was fined $25 costs and committed to jail until payment.
A preliminary stock judging exhibition for Douglas County boys and girls will showcase hogs ready to travel to the state fair. Mr Porteous will instruct visitors on hog judging to help participants learn stock evaluation for the county fair stock judging contest, a major feature last year.

Mrs Gilmare, separated from her husband after a four month separation and a pending divorce suit, was visit by a well known couple from Jaway county at Burlington station. The case involves a long history since their 1888 marriage and one child.
Aug 17 Lyon County Sheriff Walt Davis was killed and posse member J L Boggs, plus Frank Potehe and Halbert Huslee, were wounded in a gun battle with an armed hold up man near Emporia Kansas. The suspect fled toward Wiggam where armed citizens had him corralled in a cornfield awaiting capture.
Indianapolis plans Progressive party headquarters as Edmin M. Lee moves state offices to a site labeled headquarters of the Progressive national committee. The extent of campaign involvement remains undecided though a national light is expected to start in several states amid party activity.
The county treasurer prepares a delinquent tax list for taxes unpaid by September 3. The list will differ from the past and show property to be sold if taxes remain unpaid. Owners may redeem and recover property after transfer to the county. Fred McEwen of Iola arrives Friday to assume a position at Johnson and Carl.

Edward Dickinson of the railroad and New York financier E. W. Kenna examined the Kansas City to Wichita route. A second survey through Baldwin exists if the southern alignment is chosen. Eastern noteholders may fund the line, with completion decisions by McKenna based on his report. C B Hosford Ex Amok and Leon ard Hazen returned yesterday from a 1000 mile tour of Kansas and northern Oklahoma. They traveled through Marshall and Tulsa counties Pratt and Wichita Osage Emporia and into the new oil country observing crop conditions and rapid oil field growth. Hosford noted better northern crops and overall heat impact light statewide.
The Franklin county professional institute for teachers will open in Ottawa on August 21 to 26 under county superintendent direction. Between 150 and 200 teachers from Franklin and nearby counties including Miami Otage Douglas and Anderson are expected. Seven experienced instructors will lead departments with Prof Ramoneli Schwegler of the University of KeVvy among the lecturers.
Clinton Marlatt, once of Hoopeston, died at his sister’s home after a period of failing health. He moved to Hoopeston in April, later resided on family land near Lawrence and planned interment at a local cemetery.
Rev ER T Asling and family leave for Germany after his resignation as pastor of the German Methodist church in Lawrence. Rev Edward Teuwvsling is appointed instructor in Northwestern Germany and begins service in Fyanson. Asling will depart Monday from Lawrence and return for a farewell service the following Sunday. Miss Charline Smith and A Greenlees visited Kansas City today.
