Sea-Going Sloop Nearing England Reach After Atlantic solo voyage

Sloop Tinkerbelle, manned by Robert Manry, is 60 to 70 miles from Falmouth England nearing its goal after 77 days at sea. Aiding vessels including a trawler carrying Manry’s wife Virginia and two Plain Dealer reporters met him off Wolf Rock. The voyage began June 1 from Falmouth Massachusetts to Falmouth England.

Moon Photos Reveal Cratered Far Side of the Moon

Soviet scientists released high detail pictures showing the far side of the moon is heavily cratered with numerous mountain ranges and fewer seas. The images from Zond 3, taken July 20 and transmitted starting July 29, suggest the near and far sides differ, confirmed by Lipsky of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute.

Two Hurt in Sunday Morning Two Car Collision at 15th and Barker

A Sunday morning crash at 15th and Barker Avenue injured two men slightly and caused about 1045 in damage. Joseph Moore 53 suffered multiple chipped teeth and George Barnes sustained a head bump. Moore’s car damage was 600 and Barnes’ 450. Otis Gaines and Tony Moore rode with Moore. Barnes was alone.

Riot toll rises in Los Angeles six days of unrest

The sixth day of Negro riot strife in Los Angeles leaves 32 dead including 2 white officers and 1 white firefighter among 29 civilians. Injuries total 812 with 693 civilians and 78 officers hurt. Police arrest 2,847 as fire damage hits 175 million with blocks burned.

Three Climbers Die in Colorado Mountain Fall

ASPEN Colo AP three mountain climbers were killed and a fourth injured in a fall on South Maroon Peak west of Aspen on Sunday. The dead were senior Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory scientists Drs Frank E Pretzel Robert B Day and Herbert E Ungnade all with doctorates. The injured man was William B Martin another lab employee but not a scientist. Donald W Mee Eachern another scientist accompanied the group but was uninjured. Martin was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital where his recovery was expected.

City Worker Shocked In Freak Mishap

City sanitation worker Otis Carter, 36, was shocked while lifting a metal trash can that touched a power line on Route 3 Lawrence. He was checked by a doctor, cleared of serious injury, and sent home for rest after medical evaluation. Fire Department rescue was not required.

Rodeo Finale Draws 2500 At Douglas County Fair

About 2,500 spectators attended the two night Douglas County Jayhawk Rodeo linked to the Free Fair. East German Uses Bus As Shield For West Berlin Walkover

A young East German earned a dramatic escape by stepping from East to West Berlin using a sightseeing bus as cover at Checkpoint Charlie. Guards raised submachine guns but did not fire, likely deterred by nearby tourists. Observers note the defection appeared carefully planned by the 20-year-old, aided by non German sightseers aboard the bus.

Missourian Injured As His Truck Overturns

Julius M. Spitzer a 43 year old Plattsburg Missouri man suffered a head cut requiring stitches when his 1957 Chevrolet semi truck loaded with electrical gear overturned five miles south of Lawrence near Pleasant Grove on US 59. Passenger Charles Scovill 17 of Iola uninjured. truck damage totaled 1000 dollars and the box portion destroyed as Spitzer tried to stop to assist another carnival unit.

Fair Ends Saturday Night With Big Crowd

The Douglas County Free Fair closed Saturday night with a crowded midway and higher overall attendance. Charles “Clyde” Husted reported improved exhibits and about a 25 percent rise in attendance across the fair grounds and rodeo. John W. Lust of Iola won the Herdsman Award. W. O. Boehle and Gerald Boehle were runners up amid a long list of blue ribbon dairy and horticulture winners from Baldwin and surrounding locales.

Swearingen Leads Regional Livestock Show Entries

A list of show entries includes Tom Swearingen and Jae Heenan with ewes, rams, and cattle from Hampshire, Suffolk, Southdown, and Cheviot breeds. Beef cattle feature Angus and Hereford classes with judges Baldwin and Walters in Richland area. DePugh Indicted On Two Counts By Grand Jury

Kansas City AP The county grand jury indicted Robert P. DePugh leader of the Minuteman on contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possessing various bombs and shells. A kidnapping charge was not returned. DePugh posted $1,000 bond on each count. The weapons charge is a felony, the delinquency a misdemeanor. Police found a large cache of guns and grenades in DePugh’s Independence building. He said he did not place or control the material and blamed whoever did.

Dr Walters Speaks on Europe Trip at Rotary Club

Dr Byron Walters spoke to the Lawrence Rotary Club this afternoon at the Hotel El dridge about his Europe trip and the cast he encountered. Dick Raney of the International Information Committee arranged the program. Walters, a general practitioner since 1952, discussed religious and ethnic groups he studied during the journey.
