A 20 nation inter American conference approved mediation for the Paraguayan civil war. Uruguay proposed a 20 nation meeting to discuss hemispheric defense under a treaty framework. Kansas state highway commission awarded 892 miles of federal state urban and secondary road projects in multiple counties. Contracts include Bayee county and Newton U S 61 improvements and two new bridges on U S 160. Kansas City firm awarded 100 580 for 0.4 miles. Glenn C. Prescott of Providence Rhode Island arrives to work five months with a drill crew for the state geologic survey at the university. Prescott earned geology graduate work last winter at Brown University under Dr Russell Jeffords, who earned his PhD from KU in 1945.

Detroit August 16 Chrysler Corp. moved to raise prices on passenger cars and trucks effective August 18 aligning with General Motors Packard Hudson Kaiser Fraser and Nash Kelvinator. Increases average 87 dollars on Plymouth Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler cars and 65 dollars on most Dodge trucks. Labor and material costs cited. Chrysler also reported six month net profit of 36,129,457 equal to 8.30 a share, against 4,065,381 a year earlier.

Baltimore Aug 16 A.F.L. Maritime union spokesman told 4000 striking C 1 0 shipyard workers rally that a nationwide shipping strike will be called in the next couple of days. William Rentz Baltimore port agent of the Seafarers International union said the strike against Isthmian Steamship Co began Tuesday night and that the union will hit everything on both coasts and tie it up as Taft Hartley Act takes effect August 22.
A rain-making experiment at Lawrence Municipal airport dumped 65 pounds of dry ice into a cloud bank about one mile long and 2 500 feet deep. Lloyd Ware reported the cloud vanished in two minutes with no appreciable moisture recorded. The cloud top stood at 6 500 feet.
County Clerk T R Gerhart explains tax overdue properties from 1946 move to the treasurer’s tax sale list on the first Tuesday in September and stay for three years.
