Quick Thinking Mechanic Save Yankee Clipper Hero
At La Guardia Field Richard E. Ditty a 32 year old mechanic leaped to the port wing of the Yankee Clipper and pressed his hands over a ventilation aperture to smother a fire that threatened the flying boat. He was burned on hands face and neck but prevented major damage to the ship and nearby Clare training plane. The blaze started from sparks igniting fumes in the wing during routine repairs after the plane arrived from Lisbon.
