French troops slowly tighten lines at Rov e as German forces cling to position in Picardy. Analysts warn a cautious withdrawal could force a major adjustment of strategic fronts.
Allied forces press the Picardy front with Canadian troops taking Parvillers and Damery near Chaulnes while British and French lines advance around Roye. German withdrawals around Albert and Monolithe are reported as Humbert’s men secure high ground east of Thiescourt.
London reports that German withdrawals on the western front in recent days suggest an intent to abandon the offensive. Observers note 35 divisions would be needed to resume, with only 16 fresh divisions available in reserve, raising the possibility of a fallback to the Divette near the Oise.
Madrid reports Germany harms Spanish interests despite Spain aiding refugees from Kamerun and representing German interests in belligerent countries. The August 8 note to Germany highlights Germany’s ingratitude and ongoing injuries to Spain despite Spain’s neutral policy benefits.
Washington reports machinery for registering some 13 million men under the new draft extension is set in motion Provost Marshal General Crowder says preliminary instructions issued and registration will be ready upon passage of the bill. Amsterdam reports a complete agreement between Kaiser Wilhelm and Kaiser Karl of Austria following a new meeting at German headquarters.
New Equipment is Received for National Army Training School at the University. A total of 367 men enrolled, seven above contract, with rejections to adjust to about 1360 after classification. Medical exams continue, aided by a team of doctors and assistants, finishing faster than prior camps. A concrete mixer arrives for classroom use, crews to work on university buildings, quarantine for ten days, and early morning routines start at 5 45. Small crop here will not alter local market prices as most apples are shipped in. Apple crop in Douglas county damaged by late frosts and June heat, with yields around 400 percent of normal in some areas and practically no fruit in others. Lecompton reports no shortage, but other parts hit hard. Poor spraying and dry conditions reduced production. experts suggest potential doubling with proper care. Market price likely unchanged at 30 cents per gallon for cider. smaller fruits also hurt by heat.
The Kansas City Kaw Valley and Western Interurban Company won a wartime rate hike from the Public Utilities Commission raising passenger fares to 2 1 2 cents per mile and freight rates by 10 percent on the Kansas City to Lawrence line. Petitions from along the route and a Chamber of Commerce protest argued the hike would burden residents and hinder school access. The increases apply only during the present war emergency.
Rev. Dr. E. A. Edwards, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, was granted a one year leave of absence by the vestry in October 1917, extended for wartime service as he went to France with the 140th Missouri. Mrs. Edwards to occupy the rectory with their boys until his return. later the vestry again extended leave for the war period. Services at Trinity Sunday at 11. Rev L W Smith of Topeka will officiate and hold communion at noon.
Ben Clawson said today he knew nothing of forged checks tied to Linn Yence merchants and claimed he was not convicted of forgery, having served time for wife desertion and now on parole. Relatives and police suggested the girl was influenced by him while he was keeping company with her. Also, the schooner Syble, reported sunk by a German submarine, arrived safely in port today.
Beginning of Offensive shows heavy losses with over 1,160,000 killed by last March and total war deaths near 6,000,000 through July 1916. Morning papers report 1,400,000 killed by March. From March 27 to June 17 German losses reach about 120,000 killed.
Police court set for 8 o'clock tomorrow to answer a charge of doing plumbing work without a license as the city inspector presses the case against H Bennett.
The Journal-World announces it will post the War Department casualty lists on its bulletin board each day starting Monday. Two lists daily at eight o clock and eleven thirty will show killed in action and other deaths, missing from France, wounded, plus next of kin and addresses provided by soldiers. The paper cites lack of space preventing publication in columns, and notes the lists cover Kansas men mentioned in national papers.
A wartime note from August 16 describes German torpedoes stripped for material saving, lacking copper brass and propulsion to extend explosive power. Under normal conditions torpedoes were effective beyond 2,900 yards, but the stripped variants force U Boat commanders to operate much closer to targets, increasing danger while conserving materials.
School district announces fall term will begin September ninth with all grade levels starting one week later than originally scheduled. Delayed start affects transportation, class assignments, and athletics calendars. Officials urge families to adjust schedules and monitor district communications for updates.
Lawrence High School will not begin until September 16, with grade schools starting September 3. Both will end May 23, and Christmas break runs December 20 to 30. Mayor George L. Kreeck announced a big free party for Lawrence children under 16 at Woodland Park on Thursday afternoon August 22. All rides and entry will be free, with a watermelon feast, streetcar transport, and games by Prof. W. A. McKeever. The event may become an annual affair, complementing the mayor's free New Year movie show. Also reported are a fine for pig nuisance in the city, and the death of Mrs. Mary Katherine Kram four miles west of town with services at Oak Hill Cemetery.
