Death of George W Benson Obituary in Kansas paper
Hon George W Benson died at his residence in Wakarunga township near the city on the 11th inst age seventy one. A Rhode Island native, he lived much of his life in Massachusetts where he was a noted abolitionist. He married William Lloyd Garrison’s sister and aided underground railroad movers guiding a slave to Canada. He lectured on slavery and opposed abolition opponents. He moved to Kansas around 1857 and remained active. He twice served in the Kansas House of Representatives for the Wakarusa district. He suffered from an abscess and neuralgia before death. Funeral held yesterday afternoon in the Friends fashion though not a member. He leaves a wife and six children scattered in Illinois California Colorado southern Kansas and elsewhere. He was part of the Old Guard of Freedom.
