Special police unit to greet KU students in Lawrence

Lawrence police will deploy a special unit this week to curb drunken driving public intoxication and jaywalking as Kansas University students arrive. Sgt Trent McKinley says the effort targets risky behavior not limited to students and aims to reduce downtown disorder seen on busy Thursday and Friday nights. In a recent April weekend police arrested dozens for alcohol related offenses including 29 drunken driving and six open container violations. The department has not released total counts.
