Laborer Is Slain Near Baldwin Home In East Baldwin
James Wright 76 shot and killed Ralph Shults about 9 30 this morning near Wrights home in East Baldwin. Sheriff Vogler says seven buckshot slugs pierced Shults back and Wright may face first degree murder charges. Wright claimed self defense after discovering Shults allegedly attacking his daughter Della. Wrights car overturned en route to Lawrence with him and his daughter after surrender. Wright had prior 1906 murder acquittal in Baldwin.

Rev. Carter Henry Harrison rector of Trinity Church Lawrence Kansas will be extended a call to become pastor of St John’s Church in Richmond Virginia. Funeral services set for Charles Ise and son Thomas in Coffeyville
Funeral services for Charles D. Ise 58 and his son Thomas B. Ise 24 will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the family home in Coffeyville. The pair, two KU law graduates, died in a Saturday auto crash south of Carthage Missouri. Charles Ise, a WWI veteran and former Coffeyville high school principal, served as president of the Coffeyville board of education and led the local American Legion post. Thomas Ise earned a KU AB in 1935 and a law degree, was Order of the Coif member, and had won the Republican nomination for state representative. Other survivors include his wife and multiple siblings and in‑laws. Burial details follow services conducted by Walter S. Keith.

Warden Kirk Prather reported to the state board that the Kansas state penitentiary farm operated at a profit of 35241 for the just completed fiscal year. Receipts totaled 122522 with expenditures 87280 and eight carloads of vegetables shipped from the farm cannery. He urged repurposing the criminal insane ward after its removal to confine desper ate criminals and noted a 332281 balance on hand despite a reduced appropriation. The daily inmate cost was 74 cents.
