Anglican Bishops End London Meeting Defend Marriage
The Lambeth conference of Anglican bishops ended with a strong defense of Christian standards for family life and marriage. It also addressed birth control, supporting its use only where there is a clear moral obligation to limit parenthood, and condemning contraception for selfish or convenience reasons. The encyclical summary warned against laxity in home life and noted concerns about secular thoughts creeping into nations. The 70,000 word document, approved 198 to 67, includes reflections on empire decline and the moral responsibilities of Christians worldwide. The 306 bishops, including 60 from the United States, underscored that findings are influential though not mandatory.
