Rain worsened floods across central and eastern Kansas as Dry Creek dyke breaks near Salina flood a mile long stretch, forcing many families from homes. Smoky Hill and Marmaton rivers rise, with towns like Fort Scott, Lindsborg, Marquette, and Crawford reporting high water and bridges washing out. Train delays and washouts disrupt rail service across the region.

Heavy rain swells streams across central Kansas causing washouts on the Santa Fe main line west of Great Bend and between Hutchinson and Dodge City. Through service to Colorado ends, while the Kinsley cut-off remains usable. The Arkansas and Cow Creek floodwaters threaten Hutchinson as Oswego nears flood stage. Neosho River may overflow near the Oklahoma border as rain continues and corn remains generally good.
Lawrence National Guard units entrained yesterday for Camp Whitside near Fort Riley. Total strength 14 officers and 288 men with line companies about 30 men per camp. Battalion HQ took 45. Armored training and mathe gun parts to be tuned at Fort Riley. Animals, mascots, and recreation planned including dances in the camp recreation hall. Salome the Mexican burro, mascot of the Acavia fraternity, was taken along.
Nicola Sacco ended his 30 day hunger strike after prison physician Dr Joseph McLaughlin threatened force feeding if he did not eat. Mrs Rose Sacco and counsel Michael Musmanna were present as Arthur D Hill filed a bill of exceptions in the state supreme court. Captain Roy V Rickard returned from Nevada to aid Kansas Guard encampment noting severe weather hampering training at the Nevada camp.
The hearing for Sears and Fred Ottinger before Justice of the Peace Clark was continued to 2 o'clock next Monday. Eight counts comprise the charges for forgery.
Weather report lists showers or thunderstorms in the east tonight and Tuesday, with west portions mostly fair. Roads cited include Emporia Wichita Arkansas City Salina Hutchinson Pittsburg Coffeyville Dodge City with mud and passable conditions. Douglas County notes muddy roads.
New York August 15 AP choice of a successor to Elbert H Gary as chairman of United States Steel is expected to be confined to four men. Leading candidate Myron C Taylor, lawyer banker railroad director and industrialist, elected to the board in September 1925. Others are Nathan L Miller James A Farrell and Pierre S DuPont.
Nin e pilots and one woman set to launch a 2400 mile Pacific flight from Oakland toward Wheeler Field Honolulu for a 25000 prize, with nine tons of fuel among the planes. Several planes faced crashes and withdrawals, but organizers expect arrivals in Honolulu about 22 hours after takeoff despite fuel concerns and weather.
Leslie F. Edmonds of the Kansas Athletic Commission proposes a Wood Memorial to honor Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood. He suggests a Wood Memorial Association by veterans of the 89th and 10th divisions to fund a simple, rugged tribute, with the Kansas American Legion as trustee. Dessau Germany Aug 15 AP The Junkers monoplane Bremen returning from a westward attempt to reach America balked at a terrifically electrical storm over the North Sea. Sister ship Europa had landed earlier after engine trouble and dense fog. The Bremen landed safely at Dessau after twenty two hours aloft amid violent weather.
Topeka Aug 15 AP Senator Curtis Republican floor leader in the Senate said he wants friends in Kansas or nationally to avoid actions that would make him a candidate for president. He declared he will not be a stalking horse for any candidate nor discuss possible candidates until President Coolidge’s stance is clearer. He declined to comment on Coolidge’s 1928 run statement and will speak with the President before commenting further.
Elbert H Gary chairman of United States Steel died at his Fifth Avenue home after a period of illness chronic myocarditis cited as the cause. The steel giant who directed a firm with nearly two billion in assets and 300000 employees helped end the 22 hour day in the industry. Funeral plans to be announced as tributes from industrial leaders pour in.
Kansas Electric Power company in cooperation with the University of Kansas and the Kansas City, Kz Valley & Western interurban line seeks a franchise to build and operate a standard gauge street railway track from Massachusetts to Tennessee on Seventeenth street. The plan, costing about 15000, aims to haul university freight by night to the campus power house, avoiding truck traffic and reducing street destruction. If approved, a ten year triangular contract may follow.
The Kaw river began receding this morning with a noon stage of 13.8 feet. A peak of 15.2 feet was reached last night as flood waters from the Delaware and other tributaries contributed to the rise. The Wakarusa fell below its banks today after rain totaling 3.74 inches last week. Water covered the road to Bonner Springs and neared highway signs.
General John J. Pershing, visiting his father in law Senator Warren of Wyoming, will call on President Coolidge tomorrow on his way to Washington. The President will also receive Representative Sproul of Kansas. A South Dakota postmasters delegation presented a resolution urging all postmasters be placed under a real civil service.
A Missouri Pacific freight train derailed near Niotaze Kansas as a broken flange caused eight cars to derail en route to Coffeyville. Contents of one tank car leaked and were lost while officials report all cars severely damaged.
John W. Gardner state highway director said the highway commission will grant Douglas county 25 percent of the cost to pave a half mile of road. The new section will allow motor travel from Topeka to Kansas City without passing through Lawrence and will create a continuous hard surfaced route on the north side of the Kaw River from Hird’s corner to the Jefferson county line.
The paving ro pe near Lawrence North of town on 73 Wy the Golden Belt road will be celebrated at 4:50 PM tomorrow at a Williamstown Junction meeting. Lawrence and Douglas county residents are invited. Cars meet at Lovelock Chamber. Speakers include Governor Patten and state highway chairman Gardner. Road completion connects Lawrence to St Jo Mo and a second route to Foncka.
The Buy in Lawrence campaign seeks a young woman for a 10 day free trip to Florida and Cuba. Judges meet at the World office for the second vote count as a large ballot box fills early. Many voters visited the office to place names in temporary boxes ahead of the tally. The first count showed over 1,800,000 votes in the week and estimates suggest this total will rise greatly tonight.
Florence, Aug 14 United Press reports 18 300 visitors have toured Wilson Dam and its power plants since Jan 1 under government hospitality. The peak day was June 5 with 1 211 visitors from 38 states and one foreign country. Registration is required and releases the government from accident liability.
New York August 15 The death of Gary prompts a temporary selling surge on the New York Stock Exchange amid a prior drastic market decline from pool collapses. Os Steel common opened unchanged at 118 1/8, then slid to 130 1/4 as rumors spread, before recovering to unchanged by noon.
The third deciding game between the Odd Fellows and Rotary teams in the Twilight league championship is postponed from tonight to tomorrow due to wet grounds. The Rev. Charles A. Richard of First Christian church outlined conditions for world peace at a South Park union service. He called for idealism over pragmatism, humane global cooperation, sobriety with Prohibition, and service to all humanity, stressing spiritual leadership in politics and industry. Prof. Eugene Christy led the soloist program, with Loyce Rockhold accompanying.
In Columbus Ohio on August 16 A P reports double funeral services will be held Wednesday for Mrs Wayne B Wheeler wife of the Anti Saloon League counsel and her father Robert Candy of Columbus Mrs Wheeler died from burns at a Shelby Michigan hospital after clothing caught fire at the Wheeler summer cottage in Little Point Sable Michigan Her father died of heart disease witnessing the flames Mrs Candy has recovered from the shock according to Mr Wheeler.
In South Haven Kansas George W Wiley a farmer shot himself in an alley behind a hardware store while five bystanders watched. He obtained a revolver on approval and died within minutes. The incident occurred Aug 15 according to AP reports.
