Charley thrashes Florida leaves scenes of destruction
Charley the hurricane roared ashore near Fort Myers and Punta Gorda causing extensive damage in downtown Punta Gorda and Captiva Island. Officials reported power losses, collapsed walls, uprooted trees, overturned trucks, and flooded streets as the storm moved inland and weakened from a 115 mph gale. Federal aid was approved for Charlotte, Lee, Manatee and Sarasota counties as evacuees numbered in the hundreds of thousands.
