The Kansas State Board of Education considers draft rules to implement Celebrate Freedom Week, designating Sept 17 or a local week for K through 8 instruction on the Declaration and Constitution. The draft would make compliance a state accreditation condition and allow unedited religious references in founding fathers writings. The board meets today and Wednesday at the Department of Education building in Topeka.

Lawrence school board adopts budget for 2013 2014

The Lawrence school board approved a budget for the 2013 2014 year allowing up to an 18 percent spending increase though officials expect actual growth to be far lower. The vote was 6 to 0 with Keith Diaz Moore absent. Finance Director Kathy Johnson outlined the first detailed public presentation since publishing a two page Code 99 form summary of spending totals and tax levy. Johnson said actual increases have averaged 3 to 5 percent recently and are expected to stay in that range next year. Board Vice President Shannon Kimball praised efficiency as the district does more with less from the state.
