Payless profits drop on charge and store closures
TOPEKA AP Payless ShoeSource parent Payless reports Q2 net income of 3.7 million or five cents a share, down from 5.2 million or eight cents. A noncash restructuring charge of 16.9 million after taxes, or 25 cents a share, weighed on results. Revenue 727.9 million, off 0.5 percent. Company plans to sell or exit 181 Parade stores, 32 Payless ShoeSource stores in Peru and Chile, and close about 260 stores by fiscal 2004, with total exit costs expected at 40 to 60 million. First half net income 17.5 million, 26 cents a share. Shares rose to 11.37 on NYSE.
