Accounting probe questions Bell regional costs
A FCC preliminary audit cannot locate about five billion dollars worth of equipment claimed on Bell system accounting books. The missing assets bolster consumer group charges that local phone companies inflate costs to justify higher rates and access charges for long distance users. A Democratic source notes carriers were given time to locate the items. If records are corrected, rate reductions could follow.
