Bar Association Opposes Three Constitutional Amendments

The American Bar Association voted to oppose two of three proposed constitutional amendments that would alter federal powers. One would let states propose amendments without Congress, another would permit a federal court of the union to overrule Supreme Court decisions, and a third would strip federal jurisdiction over state legislative apportionment. The ABA delegates also debated reversing Baker v Carr, with support in several state legislatures for at least one amendment proposed by the Council on State Governments in Chicago.
