British and German aerial clashes mark a third consecutive day of powerful raids along 200 miles of the coast. Officials report many Dornier bombers and Heinkel fighters involved, with dozens of planes shot down and ground observers hearing the thunder of battle near Portsmouth and the Sussex coast.
Berlin reports point to an early Nazi zero hour for an invasion against England with a landing of German troops on British soil after silencing coastal batteries and crippling key facilities. German sources claim air battles to force combat and damage to Portsmouth Portland Margate and Manston airfields. Two freighters sunk and a convoy attacked east of Southend amid heavy strikes on naval bases.
London reports that Germany has sent at least 2100 aircraft to strike England in a four day prelude to blitz. Over the period Nazi raids ranged along the channel from the English Channel to the south coast with mass attacks on shipping and major ports. Portland Portsmouth Southampton and Dover faced bombardment. RAF fighters clashed in large aerial dogfights.
A press tour of Bristol shows the port and aircraft plant largely undamaged by German raids since June 17. Docks overflow with wheat and meat while buses run and crowds pass air raid shelters. One shelter entrance was bombed with minor injuries to two priests. 14 women and children unharmed. Bristol has faced warnings for 79 hours since June 17 with initial casualties June 21.
Edgar W. Phillips aged 93 former commander of Garfield post G A R and one of Wichita's last Civil War veterans died today in Wichita. He led Garfield post affairs and was known for his service in the Civil War and later community roles.
In Little Falls Minnesota Aug 13 blue advancing detachment of the 137th Infantry from Wichita closed in on retreating fourth cavalry mechanized units of the red army as part of fourth army maneuvers near Camp Ripley. Pierz defenses and road hubs shaped the clash with mixed air and ground supports.
British motor torpedo boats fought multiple engagements at night against larger Nazi surface ships. One boat rammed a target at close range while others raked close fire with machine guns and grenades. A third boat engaged two larger ships and damaged a German E boat. A boat set a German plane ablaze. no British casualties, only damage to the rammed torpedo boat.
Southampton was bombed today by German raiders causing several fires as announced by the air ministry and ministry of home security.
Italian troops in British Somaliland press toward Berbera after occupying Adadleh about 50 miles away. A British air clash sees one Italian and one British plane down. Italian bombers target Malta and push toward Berbera with air support while British bases at Lake Rudolf area come under bombardment.
Brig. Gen. William E. Shedd said congressional delays on conscription would postpone war department aims for 900000 in uniform this fall, now set to reach that level by January 1 as debates over the Burke Wadsworth bill continue. He outlined tentative timelines for National Guard and trainee arrivals to hit the 900000 total, while noting equipment would be adequate to start training. The hearing also considered home guard proposals and broader age and deferment rules for conscription.
Topeka August 13 reports show Kansas had 15 percent fewer cattle on feed August 1 than a year ago. The federal and state agriculture departments noted that eleven corn belt states combined posted three percent fewer cattle on feed, with Iowa the sole major state showing an increase.

Ed Wilcox reported that 52 cases of liquor valued at 992 dollars were stolen by hijackers on Highway 59, a mile and a half south of Baldwin Junction. He described a black 1940 Ford coach forcing him off the road and a gunman taking his load before fleeing. Wilcox, en route from Alton to Wichita, called the sheriff and later left by bus. This is the first liquor hijacking in the territory this year.
New York supply and demand swung as war fears spurred a broad market drop of 1 to over 50 points. U S Steel Bethlehem Chrysler GM Douglas Aircraft Du Pont Westinghouse Eastman Kodak International Paper preferred Great Northern Sears Roebuck Anaconda led losses while rails utilities and oils fared better.
The Soviet press says Bulgaria’s territorial demands on Romania are supported by Soviet Russia. Izvestia and Pravda claim Bulgaria’s claims are just and well founded as negotiations proceed at Germany’s prompting for a quick settlement over Dobruja lost in 1913.
Dr. Carl M. Smith reports the first infantile paralysis death in Chautauqua County. Mrs. Elmer Buchanan of Peru died in an ambulance near Garnett while en route to Kansas City Kansas.
Promoter Mike Jacobs announced postponing the Bob Pastor versus Billy Conn bout from Polo Grounds tonight to September 5 at Madison Square Garden due to rain.
Wendell L. Willkie’s acceptance of the Republican presidential nomination will be formalized at 3 p.m. in Elwood Indiana with a 10 a.m. four hour program in Callaway Park. He arrives by train from Rushville and will be greeted by Legion members before a city program featuring Sen. James Davis Arch Bobbitt and Dr William Bryan. The day ends with benediction and Willkie’s responsive address.
Reuters reported from Shanghai that France and Japan had allegedly reached agreement over Japanese demands in Indo China. No authoritative confirmation was available. Chinese quarters said a pact of amity between the French and Japanese governments had been concluded.
Hachi quotes Domei broadcast asserting Japan will not be intimidated by American interference in its relations with French Indo China. It cites a meeting between U S ambassador Joseph Grew and Foreign Minister Yosuka Matsuoka and notes Grew seeking information on Japan's Indo China plans.
Topeka August 18 Ratner urged Kansas Republicans to aid in drafting the G O P platform set for adoption August 27. He asked about 400 party council members for suggestions from groups organizations or individuals to ensure the platform represents Kansas Republicans aims. Previous invitations yielded hundreds of replies influencing the platform. The councils meet by law in two weeks with county chairs national committeemen and state office nominees among the members.
The Douglas County WCTU annual convention will convene in Fellowship Hall Baldwin on Friday August 16. The program includes devotions, welcome address, reports, a luncheon, panel discussions and performances by local musicians and speakers from Lawrence and area groups.

William T. Atkins a vice president of Skelly Oil Co and a resident of Kansas City Mo and Muscatine died at his Muscatine home after a period of poor health. He had arrived ten days earlier from a vacation trip and fell seriously ill.
O. A. Keene of Topeka was elected president of the Kansas Beekeepers association at the annual meeting. The 1941 convention will be held in Independence on the weekend closing Sunday in Topeka.
Kansas forecast shows generally fair conditions tonight with warmer readings in the extreme northwest. Wednesday will bring scattered thunder showers and cooler afternoon temperatures.
