Capper medals awarded to capper Medal holders at fair Topeka
The Health and Eugenics Department reports that 393 Capper medals have been awarded in the Fitter Families examinations at the Kansas Free Fair in Topeka over nine years. Most recipients meet the merit standard with B or above in health exams, though common defects like dental and eyesight issues appear. A 16 year old with a serious heart condition, remedied by early discovery, underscores the program’s aims. The Fitter Families movement, sponsored by the American Eugenics Society, began in Kansas, overseen by Florence Brown Sherbon at the University of Kansas. The examinations continue September 9–14 at the Kansas Free Fair, with entries in advance through Mrs. James Whipple.
