A western Geary County storm last night caused extensive property damage including fallen tents at Woodland Park and ruined barns and silos west of the city. Dozens of trees were uprooted, and a Mexican national from Alvarrando was seriously injured when a rock struck a tent.
Alonzo G Shaw and others face appellate action in district court on a justice of the peace ruling over a July threshing contract dispute. Plaintiff Debert seeks 200 dollars for failed performance after a verbal agreement. The case also involves Charles Oehlert.
Brussels reports Belgian forces have occupied the Malmedy district of Rhineland Prussia. The Belgian War Office said occupation by carbineers and cavalry would occur Tuesday, signaling a shift in the warfront near Belgium.
Reports from Coblenz and Rhine towns describe German posters warning Hin girls against associating with American soldiers after the peace treaty. American officers disclose that lists and blacklists of girls who fraternize with Americans are being compiled for public exposure and potential punishment.
Lawrence resident W A Mitchell of 1700 Tennessee Street will turn 90 in December an early settler who visited Lawrence in 1846 to preempt a farm near Greeley Anderson County. He came to the Journal World office yesterday to get a Lovell World Atlas to follow recent changes in world maps.
Berlin reports Mathias Erzberger, vice premier and finance minister, told the national assembly that Germany must quickly create a merchant fleet and aid Germans abroad with state loans. He said 26 billion marks yearly are needed to restore health, and outlined plans for a big property levy and tax overhaul to reduce debt and end the paper regime. He noted wartime debts must be honored under the peace treaty and hinted at reparations via German labor borrowed for reparation.
Douglas County commissioners will not fix the county tax levy until about August 25, the legal deadline. They aim to avoid unnecessary increases and will study holding down all levies as other districts face higher taxes. Also notes a recovered stolen Dodge from Oskaloosa and a local petit larceny case against Sid Jones filed in district court.

A Scripps-Booth roadster owned by F. E. Hughes of Topeka was burned completely after a gas tank explosion near Lawrence as Hughes left for Topeka on the Golden Belt line. The fire started at the rear from a suspected tank leak, scorching Hughes’s face when he opened the hood. A crowd of farmers fought the blaze with water but the car was gone in a quarter hour after the tank exploded. The piece ends with a note urging insurance policies for every car.
The university completes the new administration building, housing most college departments with Fine Arts in the center. Language departments stay in Fraser hall while other wings absorb Mathematics, Psychology, Physics, and related fields, with some classes shifting to the new east wing.
Kansas Attorney General Richard J. Hopkins issued an order at the request of State Superintendent of Insurance FL Travis prohibiting the use of a ten percent surcharge by five insurance companies doing business in the state. The order does not bar continued use of the surcharge if schedules persist, while Shawnee County court actions may grant a temporary allowance until a final decision. Lieutenant George W. Smith describes E Luge the first baseball pitcher for Poitiers University now visiting in Lawrence. Luge, former scrub player, served in the 137th Infantry in France and helped establish a Poitiers field and diamond for American college spirit. Baseball impressed French spectators during early intercollegiate play with Dijon students joining the action.
Aug County assessors report no taxes paid on certain vehicles while total assessed auto value reaches 164 888. State tax commission notes value at 105 148 last March. Cars taxed at 742 and 885 dollars each, with major cars untaxed adding 441 000 if reassessed. Leewick County leads in car numbers totaling 748.
Word arrived that Harriet Kreeck two year old daughter of Mayor George L. Kreeck and wife died in Colorado Springs after a prolonged illness. The mayor was recently summoned as the child’s condition grew more serious and the family sought medical care away from home.
QLD resident and longtime Lawrence settler Mr Derby leaves Bla for Manhattan to live with daughter Grace. He arrived sixty years ago as a young worker when Lawrence was prairie, later becoming a farm owner with three farms nearby. He is father to George F Derby of Derby Grain and Coal.
Chicago union leaders say the federated railway shopmen’s strike ends in Atlanta and predicts the system will operate normally within nine weeks. Some regions report workers returning as wage disputes seek settlement while Chicago district members and officials claim to have broken up international leaders meetings. Trains canceled earlier are being restored.

Robert Markley of the south part of town fell from a barn roof at Tonganoxie while working for a carpenter job. He broke one leg about ten inches above the knee and was carried to a Fort car and brought home where nurses dressed the injury and he rested this morning.
Albert Haight Willis McKay and others, brought back from Denver by Sheriff Woodward, face a preliminary hearing before Justice J W Clark tomorrow on grand larceny charges. The suspects were arrested in Chautauqua at Vinland with the Ford car owned by Alvin Owens.
