Escapees Caught After Dent of Patrols Near Lawrence

Three men who escaped a Topeka diagnostic center were tracked across Douglas and Leavenworth counties. Howard Lee Allen, 28, of Lawrence, was captured in the Globe area. Clifford Bright, 32, of Keene, and Robert E. Elam, 30, of Wichita, were brought to Douglas County Jail on suspicion of a truck theft from Kaw Dehydrating Co. near Lone Star. Police swarmed the area with Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Bureau of Investigation personnel.

Moon memorial plaque honors fallen space explorers

Apollo 15 crew members David Scott James Irwin Alfred Worden announced a plaque bearing 14 names and a silver astronaut figure placed on the moon near their rover memorializing astronauts and cosmonauts who died in space exploration. They urged permanent lunar bases and restoration of Apollo 18 and 19 missions.

Driver Charged After Fatal Head-On Crash in Amarillo

A 17-year-old Lawrence Kansas youth Monty Barnard died in a head-on collision in Amarillo. He rode as a passenger with Beverly Keller 20 of Seattle Washington. Keller's husband Stanley 22 was seriously injured. David Szilagyi 30 of Albuquerque New Mexico was charged with murder without malice and held on $15000 bond.

Cattle Lead Wild Chase Through City Streets

Two young Shorthorn cattle escaped a truck around 12 10 p m Wednesday near the North Second Street underpass and roamed for about two hours. They butted cars and a motorcycle, crossed the Kansas River Bridge, and drew a crowd before officers and citizens corralled them. One heifer struck patrolman George Temple and another dented a patrol car. injuries were limited to a rope burn and a leg bruise to a woman. The cattle were later taken to the Lawrence Sale Barn and then to the Olathe area.

Fall from 90th Floor Kills Chicago Woman

A 29 year old Chicago woman Lorraine Kowalski fell nearly 1000 feet from the 90th floor of the John Hancock Center in the Near North Side. Police said she shattered a window in a man’s apartment and did not see what happened. The building is the second tallest in the city after New York’s Empire State Building.

Butterflies swarm over Mount Shasta towns in hazy highways

Monarchs and other species blanket Mt Shasta region as swarms clog radiators on routes near Mt Shasta Dunsmuir and McCloud. Local naturalists note a three year cycle but this year’s abundance is unusually high with sightings from Mt Shasta forests to U S 89.

Reports say religious clashes spread through Londonderry as Protestants celebrate a historic victory while Belfast endures its quietest night since the fighting began. Five people were killed in Belfast as British troops clashed with snipers, raising the weekly NI death toll to 23 and prompting mass displacement and widespread destruction.

Equipment Sent Home From Vietnam as U.S. Drawdown Advances

The U S mission announced that several million dollars in excess government equipment are being shipped back to the United States for reuse by U S agencies. The first shipload valued at about 8 million dollars includes heavy earth movers and office supplies and began loading at Saigon on Wednesday. Much equipment, largely military gear, has been turned over to Vietnam as the U S withdrawal continues, with unusable items sold for scrap.

Gov. George C. Wallace considers running for president and may enter Florida North Carolina and Tennessee primaries to test his strength. He stressed no decision has been made and cited school busing and integration as a potential issue influencing a return to a third party bid.

Little Change Due On Friday Weather Forecast

A stable weather picture is forecast for Lawrence through the weekend. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures near today's for Friday with lows tonight in the 60s and a Friday high in the low 90s. Winds will be southerly at five to 15 mph and rain chances are 80 percent tonight and 10 percent Friday.

Dollar Slips Across Europe As Frankfurt Dollar Dives

In London a quiet market saw the dollar weaken slightly while Frankfurt hit a record low of 3.3890 in early trading. The dollar opened near 3.3930, down from 3.4035 on Wednesday, and the pound cost $2.4195 in London, up from $2.4193. European central banks continue interventions to bolster confidence in the dollar.
