An elderly passenger is believed dead after torrents of floodwater struck a bus on a creek crossing. Rescue teams battled swift currents and damaged vehicle as bystanders watched anxiously. Authorities urged caution as the search continues.
A Dixie Greyhound bus swamped by a flash flood eight miles south of Ancell near Cape Girardeau Missouri left the vehicle heavily flooded. An elderly passenger is missing and presumed drowned while Bill mpson of Fufaula Alabama helped rescue three others. Strong currents swept passengers from the bus and one man dove in to aid them. Most occupants waited as a wrecker arrived from Cape Girardeau to recover the scene.
Tracy California police chief and police court judge defend regular fines on illegal slot machines while operation continued. U S Tax Court ruling in Washington said former operator Charles A Clark could not deduct fines as taxes. Court noted no permit and illegal status. judges claimed fines legitimate and funneled to city coffers.

Allan Kline of the American Farm Bureau Federation told Dwight D. Eisenhower that farmers require an aggressive campaign to win support. Kline, meeting at Eisenhower’s campaign HQ, noted farm belt votes helped Truman in 1948 and pressed for stronger agricultural policy while Eisenhower discussed global peace prospects and campaign planning with backers and farm leaders.
Secretary of State Acheson urged the Czechoslovak government to permit U S consuls to visit John Hvasta an American ex sailor who reportedly escaped from a camp near Bratislava on January 2 The vice versa exchange followed Czech claims that Hvasta fled with two other former prisoners and amid calls from Rep Rodino for action to locate him The State Department said it had no information beyond Czech reports on Hvasta s status and noted it must rely on less reliable sources for updates
About 3,750 union members strike across Armour Swift Cudahy and Jecon plants after contracts with major packers expired. Walkouts left roughly 7,500 Armour workers idle. Talks with Swift Armour Cudahy proved fruitless. more meetings planned with Swift and Wilson reps to push for a 30 cent hourly raise and benefits. Personnel at Kansas City St Joseph Wichita also joined Monday action.
Washington reports say Gov. Adlai Stevenson and President Truman held a three hour talk on campaign plans and international matters. Stevenson called the discussion satisfactory and promised cooperation while Truman suggested details of the drive would be worked out later. Stevenson aims to keep Trump in the background as his running mate Sparkman and aides met at National Airport. The two camps may clash over Labor Day speech plans with Sept 1 Detroit and Milwaukee dates eyed.
Kansas business leaders surveyed by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce found that 25 percent rated citizenship training for voting as good, 42.5 percent said fair, 26.5 percent poor, and 8 percent had no opinion. Teachers were seen as well trained by 68.5 percent, 15.5 percent opposite, and 16 percent silent.

Leroy Holzman a 23 year old Kenner Louisiana ambulance driver was held for investigation of bigamy and theft after four women claimed he married them One wife said he took 2200 dollars He married Cecile Ducot Braddock in 1951 and earlier wed Clara Ledet Martha Meyers and Ernestine Palmer in 1951 and 1957 Police said he blamed blackout spells and said he spent time with each wife while claiming to love others The case was being prepared for charges with a hospital visit requested
Allman wins Republican sheriff nomination after his name drawn from a hat in Allen County. He tied with Undersheriff P H Kelley at 1230 votes in the primary, and a recount was not requested. Allman had served six months since Sheriff Lee Smith’s death and was appointed by Gov Ann. Kelley resigned to Allman after the verdict.
Douglas County Red Cross board on August 1 voted to conduct its 1933 fund drive separately next spring rather than join a United Fund campaign. Dr. John Patton cited national policy and the need for independent solicitation due to rural areas, disaster needs, and national commitments. The decision keeps local Red Cross campaigns independent for 1953 while acknowledging national goals and costs.
Millard Wright, a Missouri plumber last seen near Rolla, is the subject of an extended search reaching Kansas. Mrs. Josephine Wright said he stayed in a Lawrence hotel Friday night and planned to go to Topeka after checkout Saturday morning. A contractor's truck Wright may have driven was found near Gallaway County Prison Farm.
Police court on Monday sentenced Harry B. Snyder of Lawrence to a jail term for being drunk. Judge Larry Snyder Jr. ordered the punishment, but the judge paroled him with leave to leave town. The two Harry Snyders are not related to each other or to Topeka Park Commissioner Harry C. Snyder.
The 35th Infantry Division known as The Big When will train at Camp Ripley Minnesota for 14 days. Lawrence unit Detachment members depart early led by Maj Gen John C McLaughlin with trucks Jeeps and a train convoy. About 50 Lawrence soldiers expect to make the trip as the division prepares for individual arms and crew served weapon qualification.
