President Roosevelt sharpens attack on Senator Walter George of Georgia in Barnesville and frames a liberal versus conservative split within the Democratic Party. He hints at further interventions in Maryland, Connecticut races, and plans future speakings to push a liberal reform agenda in the South.
In Atlanta on August 12 Senator Walter F. George, denounced as a dyed in the wool conservative, declares the Democratic party serves all and vows to fight. He says Georgia will prove its people can run their own affairs and accepts the presidential campaign challenge amid cheers and a friendly exchange with President Roosevelt.

The FBI announced the arrest of two women Ruby May Roberts and Lois Weber linked to Floyd Hamilton and Huron Walters, suspects in the $34,000 Wood River bank messenger robbery. The pair pleaded guilty to Dyer Act violations and aided the chase across several states.
Postmaster General James A. Farley, Democratic national chairman, urged Michigan Democrats to keep the 1940 presidential field open until President Roosevelt signals if he will seek a third term. Speaking at a testimonial dinner, Farley said any potential candidate should wait until Roosevelt decides and praised the enduring popularity of the New Deal.

Captain Alfred Henke said damage was minor and the crew preferred to stay a day or two, not today.
Gov. Waldo Haxman announced the 1938 general property tax levy fixed at 0.99 mill, the second lowest since 1907, with total taxable property valued at 2,786,410,385. The levy yields 2,728,728.99 dollars, compared with last year’s 1.09 mills and 2,809,572 dollars. A separate 0.70537 mill soldiers bonus levy will raise 1,838,125 dollars next year.
Lawrence taxpayers are poised for a 0.65 mill levy reduction for the upcoming year due to state and soldiers compensation bond levies. The total Lawrence levy, city state soldiers county and school district, drops to about 87.08537, from last year's 37.64. The county budget hearing is Monday at 10 in the courthouse, with city county and school district budgets due by August 25. Final levies will be set later this month after the state tax commission reports the county valuation.
Lawrence Masons gathered in Kansas City Kansas for a pageant on the Victory Hills golf course illustrating Freemasonry in Kansas from 1854 Wyandotte to the grand lodge formation at Leavenworth on March 17 1856. Health officials seek the source of a dysentery outbreak at a Philadelphia indigent home near Holmesburg. Eight deaths occurred in a week, four yesterday, with about 50 people stricken and two more on the danger list. Dr. William G. Turnbull called the origin a mystery. a similar year epidemic previously killed 33 residents.
Gold buyers rushed into the London market seeking safety as world political and financial tensions rose. The price climbed 3.5 pence to 142 shillings and eight pence per ounce, the highest since 1936. Banking circles said continental interests sought security for capital, even at the cost of interest and security losses.

Kansas farmers are promised checks for federal wheat loans in the near future. J B Sherfy senior administrative assistant of the AAA said the first checks should be in the mails within 10 days. Sherfy and Roy C Wilson wheat loan supervisor are expediting the loans during a Kansas tour.
Grover C. Hartenbower of Eureka became the first person convicted in a Kansas court for failing to file a state sales tax return. He was fined $100 and sentenced to 30 days in jail in Topeka. Judge Wendell Garlinghouse found the defendant innocent on two other counts alleging failure to pay sales.
President Roosevelt comes back to Washington from a five week trip that featured a direct effort to unseat Senator Walter F. George. He urged Georgia Democrats to replace George with Lawrence S. Camp and then resumed government duties amid questions on party discipline in upcoming primaries and liberal conservative standards. He was greeted by Hull Perkins Woodring Roper and General Malin Craig before driving to the White House.

Federal meteorologist S D Flora says unsettled conditions stay tonight and Saturday with slight chances of rain due to a westward moving low pressure area. Morning lows range from 65 to 74 in western areas and 70 to 74 in the east with scattered showers noted recently. Florence records .35 inch precipitation, Hutchinson .07 inch.
The state gasoline tax brought in 978 593 in July, up 47 462 from July 1937, per E J Kirchner director of the department of inspection and registration. Exemptions for non highway fuel totaled 574 279, down 38 735 from last year. Cigaret tax receipts were 108 424 and malt beverage tax 53 64.
