St Joseph Michigan Aug 12 AP King Benjamin Purnell testifies for himself in the state dissolution suit denying a legal divorce from his first wife after doctors note he is ailing. He says many attorneys advised him no divorce was needed and claims no mistreatment of women, with defense arguing he is very sick and cannot endure long sessions.
Governor Albert C. Ritchie of Maryland told the University of Virginia Institute of Public Affairs that a strong drift toward self government and self determination for American cities will emerge in coming years. He cited home rule movements and liberalizing legal decisions on city zoning as guiding forces. He warned that cities now house about 60 percent of the population and should be treated as political entities with rights to self rule.

President Coolidge endorses a nationwide radio audition to discover American singers and raise radio standards. In a letter to C. J. Matthews of the Atwater Kent Foundation he calls the project laudable, hoping it will stimulate musically inclined youth and provide opportunities that might not otherwise exist.
City commissioners met to set the annual tax levy and indicated little room to reduce the current year levy. A 33.52 mill total is planned, with a 0.52 mill cut proposed but rejected due to an estimated $9,000 revenue loss. Howard Hickok of Council Bluffs plans to sue the Nebraska State Historical Society over a pamphlet calling Wild Bill Hickok a coward who killed innocent people. He says authentic records show his uncle was a famed plainsman and Indian scout who killed only desperadoes. He will go to Topeka to gather more data to refute the claim.
Thom as Watson Roach 72 of Salina Edns former Kansas Wesleyan College president died in Edmonds Washington after illness at the National Education Association Convention. Roach taught in Ohio and Iowa led a Kansas college and served as Salina Planters Bank vice president and mayor in 1900 and 1901. Survived by widow Angeline Olivia Martin. Funeral plans not announced.
Thirty two children were examined at Baldwin's first pre school clinic held yesterday. Among them two babies four and nine weeks old. Nurses reported most children in good condition. Clinic part of county school health service aided by Red Cross and TB association. Arrangements by Miss Norma Gardner Baldwin PTA secretary. Dr Liston and Dr Fortney of Lawrence assisted. Dr Edmiston also present. Nurses Electa Kindelsperger Mary McAuliff Rees Raybourn. Dr Sybil Woodruff from the University spoke on nutrition. Mr and Mrs Ed Anderson visited in the afternoon. Mrs McAuliff began duties this week and expects a good year's work.

T H Gauck tears down the sixteen room frame building to clear the lot for Trinity Lutheran church relocation and plans to reuse materials for two bungalows in University Place.
Union Pacific crews report a storm across western Kansas wrecking crops along seven to eight miles wide and twenty five miles long between Oakley and Menlo. A farmer near Oakley lost crops and his barn to lightning, while John R. Albright, 43, of Culver, was found dead after a runaway team.
