State Crop and Livestock Reporting Service estimates 309.2 million bushels of 1972 Kansas wheat, up from July and marking the second largest on record. The per acre yield is forecast at 33.5 bushels on 9.23 million acres, aided by favorable late spring and early summer weather. Also forecast: sorghum 110.56 million bushels, corn 8. per acre 91 bushels, soybeans 21.39 million, oats 8.58 million.
Louise Wheeler, director of the Douglas County Legal Aid Society, reports 15 to 20 misdemeanor cases handled in July the first full month it could take criminal cases. Relaxed guidelines let law students assist after a June Supreme Court ruling ensures counsel for indigent defendants. Most clients came of their own accord, with fewer jail sentences expected as judges weigh jail terms at arraignments.
The Senate approved a plan to make election day a national holiday starting November 7 this year and every two years afterward. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota, who introduced the proposal, said a day off would help workers vote.
