Finger Amputation After West Kansas Highway Crash

Army Is Calling Reserve Officers to Active Duty by Oct 6
The army announced calling 7,862 reserve captains and lieutenants not in the organized reserve to active duty by October 6 for 21 months. It will recall 582 officers from medical, dental, veterinary, and medical service corps. Scattered thundershowers likely Saturday through Wednesday with half inch statewide moisture and near normal temperatures in the southwest. Rain last night washed out a railroad bridge on the Union Pacific near the Saline river at Mingo and caused rises along the Arkansas river. Temperature extremes ranged from 61 at Garden City to 68 at Goodland as cities reported rainfall in the western two thirds of the state. Ross Channell, 42, longtime automobile dealer in Lawrence and later Concordia, died last night of a heart attack while at a theater. Born February 4, 1498 at Corning, he lived in several towns, operated agencies with partners, and moved to Concordia in 1949. He was active in Kiwanis, Elks, Chamber of Commerce and the Country Club. Funeral will be Saturday at Rumsey Funeral Home in Lawrence, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Surviving: his wife of the home, one daughter Mrs Arthur Seiwald, three brothers Delbert, Frank, and Wayne, and two sisters Mia Cleo Franz and Mrs Dorothy McKee.
