Destructive St Louis fire kills several firefighters
Fire at Bishop Speare store on North Second Street gutted the building by 9 AM after a blaze started around 2 AM. Firemen Barney McKeenan Frank McDaniels and Chris Hoell died. Hoell was linked to the Pompier ladder invention. Injuries included Feldtman and Zimmerman. a spectator James O'Brien was crushed by debris. Losses total about 160000, with much insured. A prairie fire near Eighty-ninth and Halstead streets at about 5 pm led to the total destruction three hours later of the Weber Wagon Works. The blaze also consumed a two story frame adjacent to Auburn school and four cottages on Wallace street north of Eighty-first.
