Oregon and Santa Fe Trails Bring History to Lawrence
About 50 members of the Oregon and California Trails Association visited Lawrence to retrace the Oregon and Santa Fe trails through Douglas County and Civil War sites. They walked the Santa Fe Trail near Black Jack Battlefield, meeting John Brown era reenactors and learning how settlers and militia shaped the era. Enthusiasts said history must be taught vividly, not just read, as members like Kerry Altenbernd and Vern Osborne explained.
