City staff may lead heritage area plan under Destination Management
Lawrence could host a larger role in managing the National Heritage area created in October by Congress and President Bush. A nonprofit would contract with National Heritage to oversee development under Destination Management. Leaders from the chamber and heritage board emphasize Lawrence as the preferred management center and seek approvals from city county commissions and the heritage board. The plan would fund and coordinate the Convention and Visitors Bureau and local museums through the chosen management firm.
