Swine breeder takes top prize again at fair
Jason Gilges, 18, of Worden, won the grand champion market hog for the second straight year at the Douglas County Free Fair. His 241-pound crossbred hog capped a 4-H career with planned three-peat next year. Also noted, antique tractor enthusiasts gathered for the rodeo arena pull as Dale and Alan Babbitt discussed family roots in farming and a stroke recovery. The fair faced ride inspection issues with Stanley Shows prompting ticket and safety assurances. Demolition derby tickets remained, with about 800 sold and 4,000 still available across Friday.

Appraiser clarifies annexation issues
Douglas County Appraiser Marion Johnson said property taxes are based on fair market value and not simply on whether a property lies inside or outside the city. Zoning and access to city services can raise appeal to buyers and indirectly lift value, especially if rezoning enables commercial development. Johnson spoke at the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission, which noted annexations require property owner consent.
