The Defense Department set September’s draft quota at 25 000 men the highest since the Korean War ending. The Navy Marine Corps and Air Force will not call during September while the Army prepares three training divisions for combat. The total drafted since September 1950 rises to 2 640 950 with inputs from volunteers and re enlistments.

Man Charged Over Airliner Hijack To Havana

Federal officials filed two counts against Albert Cadon 27 accusing hijacking with a gun and related assault aboard a Pan American DC8. Cadon forced the jet to Havana and Cuba allowed the flight back to Miami with no injuries among 82 aboard. he remained in Cuban custody as charges likely await his return.

Rescuers Find Bodies After Plant Explosion

In Granite City Illinois a wing of an instant coffee plant exploded killing two men Shelby Dotson 22 and Victor Frisse 57 and injuring six. Rescuers recovered the two bodies early today. One injured man remains in serious condition. The blast damaged a 24 story Nestle building and the cause is still under investigation.

Investigators link a body recovered from the Marais des Cygnes River near Osawatomie to Harry Kurtz, 56, a former Douglas County resident, based on glasses made for him in 1957. They seek his twin Homer Kurtz as searches extend along the Marais des Cygnes and Kansas River. a suitcase with Homer’s clothing was found near Eudora. Relatives report the brothers recently left Oregon and North Carolina, returning in July for their mother’s funeral, with last sightings about three weeks ago.
