Edwards campaign reroutes to Abe & Jakes amid downpour

Democratic vice presidential hopeful John Edwards prepared to speak at Buford M Watson Jr Park but rain forced a last minute venue shift to Abe & Jakes Landing in Lawrence. Police Secret Service and volunteers scrambled to secure the 720 capacity venue while crowds outside listened to speakers as Edwards addressed supporters from the lawn and mall area.

Heat drains crowd at John Edwards visit in Lawrence

Two people suffered heat exhaustion during John Edwards’ Lawrence visit. A woman at Abe and Jake’s Landing was treated and transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, with non serious injury. A second person outside was treated on scene. Elwell praised the event as a great opportunity, while officers provided security and cleanup would be lengthy. Local officials will cover overtime costs.
