Lawrence plans more tree removals as Dutch elm disease spreads. Parks chief George Osborne notes a higher incidence than last year but aims to cut about 400 elms this year, with 125 already removed. About 2,300 American elms remain on city right of way, far fewer than in 1960.
A $382000 research grant was awarded to Far-Mar-Co of Hutchinson Kansas to continue work on fractioning wheat. Senator Robert Dole announced the grant noting the project aims to separate food value from nonfood uses, with potential grain based alcohol as a gasoline additive.
