A milk wagon driven by Chris Birrton failed to clear a buggy and became stuck in a streetcar track. The left rear wheel of the buggy was twisted, breaking springs and brace rods while no one was hurt. The buggy’s owner was Guy Petit and the wagon was hitched near the curb. The Gardner dairy milk wagon remained undamaged.
W. Y. Morgan of Hutchinson, in Lawrence on business, predicted Republicans will win Kansas by 106,000 in the coming election. He noted voters have returned to the Republican ticket, while he has just read Colorado reports of hot weather in Kansas and now finds his office busy with vacations.
At the next regular meeting the City Commission will discuss tree protection with L. McHenry of Baldwin an expert in tree diseases and pests. A sprayer may be purchased this year and plans will be made to combat the cankerworm in Lawrence.

A Dunmire report on drainage problems near Thirteenth and Fifteenth streets was handed to a official for inspection. Two sextons were re appointed for the cemeteries: Herbert Rees at C Hill and James Lynch at Maple Grove. The board adjourned to 2 pm Friday for the franchise vote.
New York Aug 9 rail unions representing about 400000 workers accepted a mediation offer from the United States Board of Mediation and Conciliation after a conference of railroad managers appealed for federal intervention. A. B. Garretson announced the acceptance following the board's delivery of the proposal. The board was ready to begin talks with the parties.
J R Mott of the International Y M A tells New York readers that over five million prisoners are confined in camps of belligerent nations. He cites Germany with the largest number and claims Russia shows increases, noting more than 490,000 added since the war began. Mott criticizes reports on prisoner treatment as exaggerated.
