Mars missions poised to map, analyze ancient Martian life
NASA scientists say the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Pathfinder launches this year will not prove life existed on Mars but will steer future searches. Pathfinder's rover will analyze rocks for chemical makeup at a site near a large ancient channel, while Global Surveyor will map geologic features and help locate meteorite sources. The missions aim to build Mars knowledge for a targeted return of samples, with more missions planned by the U.S., Russia, and Japan in the near future.

KU biologists mulling alien life paper finds cautious stance
Two Kansas University biologists say they will review a forthcoming Science paper before judging claims that life may have existed on Mars. They caution the need to verify evidence and avoid Earth contamination, noting the broad scientific openness to such possibilities.
