Makarios Buried in Mountaintop Cyprus Tomb

Archbishop Makarios the Cypriot leader was buried in a mountaintop tomb after a large funeral procession through Nicosia. Tens of thousands watched as his coffin, carried on a jeep drawn gun carriage, was transported to Kykko monastery in the Troodos mountains. Crowds and dignitaries, including a U S delegation led by Warren Burger, attended the service and viewed the coffin along the route.

Herpetology meeting at KU highlights frogs as ecological guides

Kansas University hosts the national Herpetologists League and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles with 350 members. Nursing home hearing slated for Lawrence August session

Gov Robert Bennett's special nursing home study committee will hold a public hearing in Lawrence on August 22 to hear local concerns. The session is one of three in August with Pittsburg on August 16 and Great Bend on August 24, as the panel plans monthly Topeka meetings through December to draft reforms. Three Lawrence residents sit on the panel and the hearing will run 10:30 to noon and 1:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library. The committee aims to set penalties for substandard facilities, a receivership option, and rules for full financial disclosures by owners.

Tower Planned for Douglas County Judicial Center Parking Lot

Douglas County civil defense chief said a 180 foot antenna tower for emergency communications will be built in the parking lot of the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center in downtown Lawrence. The project, part of a 63000 dollar emergency operations center package, faces delays from wet weather and foundation work but initial excavation starts next week with full operation aimed by early November.

The Ohaebosim Medical Clinic in Wichita was dedicated as a major medical milestone. Rep Dan Glickman joined a bandage cutting ceremony with Dr Linus Chaebosim, who plans to add an obstetrician and a pharmacist soon to serve the inner city minority elderly population.

City to weigh major agenda items in Lawrence meeting

Lawrence city commissioners face a Tuesday session at 7 p.m. on the First National Bank Tower agenda includes a public hearing on the 1978 budget and revenue sharing as well as a 1.45 mill increase to total 36.42 mills. They will review budget allocations, traffic plans, a Southwest Plaza access plan, Westridge phasing, and the Closeout Carpet Building conversion.
