Lieut. Col. Cecil Lessig the Kansan became the first American in U S Army uniform to fly against German-occupied Europe. He crossed the channel with the RAF on March 25 in a Spitfire in tail end Charlie. The four plane element joined a 36 plane formation and withdrew after France when 50 Messerschmitts appeared.
